This design is modeled after the Gadsden flag which is named after American General Christopher Gadsden (1724–1805), who designed it in 1775 during the American Revolution. It was also used by the Continental Marines as an early motto flag. It is considered one of the first flags of the United States, and was later replaced by our current Stars and Stripes flag. The Gadsden Flag is seen as a symbol of American patriotism, disagreement with government, or support for civil liberties.
